LMIA
A Labor Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) may be required to obtain a work permit in Canada. An LMIA is a document that an employer in Canada may need to obtain before hiring a foreign worker. It is designed to ensure that the hiring of foreign workers will not have a negative impact on the Canadian labour market.
To apply for a work permit through an LMIA, you will need to follow these steps:
- Find a job offer from a Canadian employer willing to apply for an LMIA on your behalf.
- The employer must apply for the LMIA through Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC).
- The ESDC will assess the job offer to determine if any Canadian workers are able and willing to do the job. If the ESDC approves the LMIA, they will issue a positive LMIA.
- With a positive LMIA, you can then apply for a work permit. You must provide the LMIA and other documents to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) as part of your application.
- IRCC will review your application and, if approved, will issue you a work permit.
It's important to note that not all jobs require an LMIA, and some programs allow you to apply for a work permit without one. You should consult with an immigration lawyer or a licensed immigration consultant to determine the best path for you to obtain a work permit in Canada.
